A word of warning for anyone who is hoping to “upgrade” their “Vista Home Premium
“ to “Windows 7 Professional “. The Windows 7 Upgrade package will not upgrade
your Vista Home Premium to the Professional 7 version with out doing a “clean” install.
What this means is that you will have to back up all of your data (recommended anyway),
and then let Windows 7 essentially wipe out all of the data off of the hard drive.
Once completed, you will have to spend hours re-installing all of your software programs
you previously installed on Windows Vista. The only software version you can upgrade
from using the Windows 7 Pro upgrade is Vista Premium Business, which by the way,
is no longer for sale. Several people including me bought the upgrade package several
months ago at a reduced price, only to find out the upgrade would not work with Vista
Home Premium which is what most people have. Why Microsoft buried this information
so deeply in their web site is disconcerting and not fair to it’s customers. You
should also be aware that Microsoft’s One Care, which I thought was a great product,
is not supported on Windows 7 and must be uninstalled before performing the upgrade.
If you used One care to back up your files, you will have to use another method of
backing up your files as you will not be able to re-install One Care back on your
computer after Windows 7 is installed. Microsoft “Mail” in Vista has also been replaced
with Microsoft Windows “Live Mail” which I will comment on later this month. Below
is a link to Microsoft web site “Windows Upgrade Considerations” where a chart shows
you the upgrade paths. I also recommend downloading the Window 7 Upgrade Advisor
to see what programs and hardware are supported on your PC. It only takes a few minutes
to run and may help in your decision on which version if any you will want to upgrade
to.
